Misidentified Engines
Engines commonly mistaken as a Type 4
Case prefix: CT/CZ
Original application: 1980-82 VW Vanagon (European market only)
Displacement: 1585cc
Note/Comments: European case only. Kind of a severely modified Type 1 case. Had problems with cooling and cam followers. Used cooling system similar to Type 4, but not interchangible. Uses Type 1 heads. Crankcase is basically a Type 1 with cast in oil filter flange (like a Wasserboxer). The CZ engine featured dished pistons to reduce compression ratios. For more information about the CT/CZ engine please refer to my tech article on this engine.
These tables are by no mean the most thorough listing, but it is a representation of my years of research of Type 4 powered vehicles. I'd would like to hear from you if you have some information not listed here.
